(3 hours) This course is designed to facilitate the analysis and interpretation of the mass media's treatment of crime and the criminal justice system. The focus of the course is on the roles that movies, television dramas, novels, television news programs, and newspaper play in defining and conceptualizing criminality/deviance and criminal justice agencies. Examined are social perceptions of crime and criminal justice; how they are perpetuated and created by the mass media.
