(3 hours) Prerequisites: ENGL 111, 112, and either ENGL 202, 203 or 204. A survey of the English language from Indo-European backgrounds through Old and Middle to Modern English. Major changes in phonology and syntax examined in a historical/cultural context, with Modern English including dialects and new grammars. Offered: Fall.
