(3 hours) Prerequisite: HIST 212. History 430 surveys the development of American diplomacy since World War II, utilizing secondary readings, primary sources, fiction, and film. Events such as the origins of the Cold War, the development of the national security state, the Korean War, the arms race, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, detente, the end of the Cold War, and post-Cold War challenges will be examined within the context of domestic and international politics, ideology, and culture. Additionally, this course is intended to sharpen students’ analytical and critical thinking skills as well as cultivate an appreciation for the contemporary relevance of the historical material presented. Cross-listed with POLI 430 (History = Parent). This course cannot be challenged.
