Prerequisites: POLI 311 or 312. An introduction to the domestic politics of sub-Saharan Africa, explaining the recent rise of both multiparty democracy and state collapse across the continent. The course also examines the colonial legacy, the nature of the African state, ethnic conflict, class divisions, the role of the military and the problems of economic underdevelopment. This course cannot be challenged.
